The invention describes a method for producing functionalized graphene at its edge positions using graphite. In the presence of a reaction medium containing methane sulfonic acid and phosphorus pentoxide, or a reaction medium containing trifluoromethanesulfonic acid, an organic material with one or more functional groups reacts with graphite to produce graphene with functionalized edges. Subsequently, high-purity and large-sized graphene films can be obtained by dispersing and collecting the graphene, particularly by treating the graphene in a functional manner, with a centrifugation separation solvent and compression, especially in heat. According to the present invention, graphene can be produced economically in large quantities with minimal loss of graphite.
