This invention relates to mutant microorganisms with improved starch utilization and methods for preparing them. The mutant strains can effectively utilize various starches, including cellulose and cellobiose, making them useful for the production of biofuels, physiologically active substances, pharmaceuticals, or industrial chemicals from lignocellulosic biomass. It also reduces the need for adding one of the three enzymes used in the saccharification of lignocellulose. Furthermore, it eliminates the need for a separate reactor for fermenting pentose and hexose sugars.
